on seed collected from the Rocky Mountains
and Region 2 of the USFS.
METHOD: Cold, moist stratification (40ºF. five-days/week,
70ºF two days/week) on top of cooton + light. Germinated
seedlings counted on the 28th, 33rd, 54th, 78th and 113rd day.
Seeds were collected from the Pike's Peak National Forest in 1998.

NOTES: "Hard seed"=there were still dormant
seed after 113 days of stratification, which means seed will probably
germinate over a two-year period in the wild. There was a ecotypic/elevational
difference in the Elymus canadensis populations in how fast they
germinated.
HOW TO READ THE CHART: Using Bromus ciliatus as the
example, after 28 days of cold moist stratification, 90% of the
seed germinated; and by the 33rd day, 100% had germinated. There
was no change after the 33rd day, and threr were no dormant or
"hard seed" left at the end of the test.
