Pepper size can guide you to the expected range of hotness of a pepper. By measuring the width (not length) of a hot pepper pod. The following figures are Dremann's Hotness Scale (DHS) for green, fresh unripe pods. They indicate the number of ounces of salsa will have a barely detectable hotness when one ounce of peppers are added. Red ripe fresh fruit, double the figures. Dried pods, multiply figures by five.

0.25"-0.5" (5-10 mm)----------- 1,000 to 8,000
0.5"-1" (10-25 mm)------------- 100 to 2,000

1.5"-3" (4-7.5 cm)-------------- 50 to 250
